Walk the walk here

The key difference between unity and uniformity is their acceptance of differences; when there is unity, people tend to tolerate and accept differences, but uniformity implies that everyone is alike, so there is no room for differences. In the same way everyone thinks they know what pizza is, while in fact, that’s not as simple. This puts the term “pizza” in a different perspective and place. The place either of uniformity or the place of unity.

In this audio walk piece, we interviewed and recorded people on their thoughts on what pizza is. The starting idea was that everyone knows what pizza is. This site-specific audio walk piece guides the listeners through the streets of the Hague in the Netherlands, moving them from one pizza place to another, wearing headphones connected to their mobile phones. Using the application Echoes.xyz, each person’s GPS location triggers the audio files (recorded and edited conversations and samples found on the web), by entering the designated zones in the map.

Throughout the walk and the piece, the simplicity of answering what a pizza is is questioned by the people’s interviews and the narrative that the story follows. The audio walk as artistic and musical medium points out that there are different acoustic spaces in which a person may enter and experience variable sonic relationships. The city itself has its own rhythm and tonality. Walking around with headphones and listening to the audio walk composition interrupts this outer acoustic space and the inner acoustic space of a person (e.g. the thoughts someone might have while walking). The way the narrative unfolds and the whole sonic experience is created, is heavily dependent on the chosen material and the way they are decided to be presented in space through the desired compositional strategy. Acoustic space, inner, outer, or an intervening one, shape in a different way any perceivable walk.
